TNSGTEP
Tennessee State Guard Training and Evaluation Program
|
The Tennessee State Guard Training and Evaluation Program (TNSGTEP) is
set forth in four references that are signed by the CG TNSG and are directive
in nature. All personnel assigned to Training Planning programs, all senior
NCOs (SGM and CSM) and all Field Grade Officers (MAJ-COL) should be
knowledgeable in these directives. Click on blue link to download the
document in .pdf format.
The source document for the program is TNSG Manual TNSGM 7-0 Training
the TNSG which not only explains the mechanics of the program but also the
philosophy of training the TNSG. The importance of the Mission Essential
Task List (METL) is covered in detail and includes construction of the METL.

The source document for Leadership training is the TNSG Pamphlet
TNSG PAM 350-58 Leader Development for the Tennessee State Guard. The
tasks and responsibilities for Leader training are covered in detail.

The source document for training of individual soldiers in Soldiers
Common Tasks is the TNSG STP-7-1234SMCT The Soldier's Manual of
Common Tasks. The manual contains training for Instructors, Lesson
outlines for all Common Tasks, and Evaluation Guides for testing the tasks.

The directive for training individual sections, Regimental and Battalion
staff, and units as a Command is the TNSGTEP -7-30-MTP, Mission Training
Plan for the TNSG Regiment. Preparation of the Regimental METL, Training
Exercises, Evaluation of Training, and Section training are all covered.
Chapter 5 contains Training and Evaluation Outlines (TE&O) for training
every section of the Regiment.

All training should be recorded on a Form 5165 and filed in chronological
order in the Unit Training Workbook.

Hints on Using the TNSGTEP
With the TNSGTEP now being the master system for training in the TNSG, I felt it was
necessary to clear up some misconceptions and misapprehensions about how the TNSGTEP
is used. In particular, the Mission training Plan (MTP) seems to loom imposingly on the minds
of Training Planners. So I have developed a FAQ to cover the TNSGTEP.
Do we have to do all the tasks in the MTP?
No. The MTP was designed to cover everything you could know in that mission task. It is
pretty much impossible that anybody would attain 100% of the MTP. You train and evaluate
only those tasks that you will do during a training iteration (session). Hopefully, you will add
different tasks in the next iteration to train to more proficiency.
What are we graded (Evaluated) on?
You are evaluated only for those tasks you were to train on. If you accomplish 4 out of 4
tasks assigned, you have a 100% grade for that iteration.
What if we don’t reach proficiency on any of the tasks?
Than the task is marked for further Practice (P) or Untrained (U) meaning you didn’t use the
task at all. Those portions then will need to be your starting point for your next training
session (iteration).
Who assigns these tasks and who decides how long we have to attain them?
The unit commander and his training section (S-3) pick the tasks and set milestones. If you
read the MTP it tells you that all training design is done by the Unit Commander. Only he
knows his assets and time constraints. The METL drives training and the METL is
constructed by the Unit Commander.
What is the purpose of the MTP, if we design our own training?
The MTP is a template or guide for your designing. It puts the Mission Essential Tasks into a
standard format to be used throughout the TNSG and provides enough tasks to fill out your
training. The Training and Evaluation Outlines give you a logical plan to train with that will
put you on the same level of training as other TNSG units. In short we will all train to do the
same tasks in the same logical way.
How do we document our training?
The Academy recommends that that each command keep a Training Workbook . Staff training
should be recorded on the T&EO. Individuals who are trained should be recorded on a TNSG
Form 5165. This form should be used for any type of training conducted. Both documents
should be kept in a substantial 3 ring binder in chronological order. Both forms are
designed to be downloaded and filled out in longhand to serve as a real time record.
Where do we get resources (Training Outlines and forms)?
The Training Evaluation and Outlines should be used for training outlines for staff training
and the Soldiers Manual Of Common Tasks (SMCT) should be used for training outlines for
Sergeant’s Time Training (STT).Both are available on the TRC .
